Treatment for TMJ Symptoms

Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome disorder, or TMJ, is a broad term for severe or chronic inflammation of the joint of the jaw - a joint which functions primarily for movements related to talking, chewing, or any acts involving the opening and closing of the mouth. The joints - two on each side, is directly connected to the skull.

The pain associated with TMJ is often misinterpreted for other problems such as earaches and toothaches. Since both joints are closely situated near the ear and the teeth, a TMJ disorder pain will naturally radiate to the ears or teeth, but is nowhere associated with ear or tooth problems.

TMJ can also be caused by some other inner or outside factors such as, bad oral habits, bone disease, trauma, and hereditary elements. When you suffer from TMJ, one or all of the known TMJ symptoms may manifest itself. In order not to confuse real symptoms of TMJ Disorder from some common physical problems, it is best to consult a physician to be sure.

Common TMJ Symptoms

TMJ symptoms can be categorized as mildly painful to being extremely painful. There's a gray area here, since all individuals are not made equally, with some being able to tolerate more pain compared to others, and vice versa. Regardless of this, symptoms of TMJ should be taken with a seriousness befitting any life-threatening disease or condition, for if left untreated will severely threaten ones life and way of living.

Some of the more common TMJ symptoms are the presence of severe headaches or migraines, a lock jaw, ringing in the ears, dizziness or vertigo, sharp stabbing pain in the ears or jaws, problems with hearing, feelings of numbness in the arms or hands, swelling of the jaws, worn-down teeth, and popping or clicking sounds when the mouth is opened and closed.

Some other TMJ symptoms may appear whenever there is a trauma to a person's neck, face, head, and jaw area, from an accidental blow, or from being hit with great force by a hard object. If you happen to have such symptoms, seek prompt medical attention right away.

Severe TMJ Symptoms

People need to realize that the more severe the symptoms of TMJ Disorders are, the more it should be treated immediately to prevent any permanent and irreversible harm from happening. Some people just simply take some things lightly, and in cases regarding experiencing physical ailments, some tend to delay going to a doctor or specialist for fear of knowing the harsh truth of their problem - and in some instances do self-medication.

When the symptoms are not addressed promptly, it can cause more additional damage, not only to the affected part, but also to the surrounding and nearby areas of the jaw joints and muscles, facial nerves and muscles.

But no matter how severe, or how far into the condition has developed into, there exist today, more than before, various TMJ treatments that can have a big impact in reducing and relieving the symptoms. One also has the option of doing some helpful TMJ exercises that can help strengthen and give flexibility to the affected area, as well as help reduce some negative symptoms of a TMJ Disorder.
